Minus 1

shopping carts are just not as exciting as back home.....you can't barrel down an aisle and ride the cart.....it just goes to the side and crashes into the wall.....a distinct absence of fun

another typical day ensconced in a world of strange opinion and rampant Konglish:

GH - "what is a mangosteen?"
Student Y - "what is.....what.....what what?"
Student Z - "mangosteen.....i have a hint.....apples, orange, pineapples..."
Student Y - "uh.....we-uh, hmmm.....SPIDERRRRR!"

Phoenix Park: part III (The Triumph)

once again, 4:30am wake-up was a delightfully painful, horrifying experience.....3 or 4 different alarms, all strategically set to go off approximately 1 minute after the previous one in order to dissuade multiple snooze button presses, encouraged consciousness through a series of hellish squeaks and bleeps.....the highway out of Seoul was unusually traffic-free, helping our cause of getting onto the slopes while the snow was still fresh and untouched....that first run of the day, when you are one of the first people on the slopes, the sun is rising and the air is cold, is a coveted experience

i was introduced to several of Lee's friends, all of whom also traveled from Seoul to snowboard.....except for the fact that they are also incredibly lazy, and decided to sleep through the 4:30am wakeup in order to board at night

i threw down all my best Korean phrases back at the condo and stumbled my way through some conversation between myself and J.J......there were astounding displays of marginal understanding and partial comprehension.....we found success, however, in drinking etiquette and critiques of popular Korean male fashion and personalities.....which eventually spiralled into wanton verbal abuse and biased, prejudiced lambasting of the tv.....from which i fear it may never fully recover

the reality of teaching life sank in once again Sunday like the teeth of a parasitic vampire, albeit one who (as with my school) offers you money after that initial suffering.....there never seem to be enough hours in the day to complete or even begin all of the productive and useful things that are planned.....and at first i just sat down in my chair, then decided to regroup and come up with a newer, more exciting plan.....which was 4 hours ago and i am still in the chair

Intuitive Changes

for the first time in possibly an eternity, it actually snowed and remained significantly snowy enough to build up a shallow blanket covering the ground and the trees.....it reminded me of snow days and backflipping off the roof back home.....Seoul is not at all known for it's wintery scenery, so this was a remarkable change, considering that one week hovered around the -12 mark while the next shot up to a balmy +9.....it's true that the greenhouse effect must be mere invention and that CO2 emissions cannot effect climate change.....after all, we only have about 3 major tropical hurricanes per year, and world ocean temperatures only increase every few minutes.....we've got at least 50 more years of 'normal life' left before everyone is forced to live on the moon

teaching is becoming a more and more involved process as the weeks and months progress.....you outlearn that you will change the world and begin to focus on improving the system, then disproving the system, then scamming the system and then finally how to bring your school down from the inside.....once you are in the classroom though, and you are observing kids you started with understanding new concepts and developing new ideas, you suddenly realize that you can in fact change the world

sometimes a day can feel neverending, while a week will suddenly vanish.....the manner in which time decides to allow itself to pass can offer different perspectives on life here.....during school hours, things are busy and can be hectic.....and then once the weekend hits, you look back on a week that that felt like it lasted about 5 minutes
